Kinnitty Castle's history dates back much farther than the
19th century Gothic Revival castle that we see today. In fact,
the estate dates as far back as 1200AD to the time of the Ely
O'Carrolls, who were responsible for building some forty castles
in the region. The original castle was destroyed in war not
ten years after it was built, but it was rebuilt again by Normans
in 1213. Since that time the castle was ruined and rebuilt several
times until 1811 when architects, the Pain Brothers, were commissioned
to restore and extend the castle into what we see today. The
Pain brothers also designed Dromoland Castle and Adare Manor.
Today all rooms are en-suite and have been exactingly decorated
with antiques. The house, overall, is luxurious, giving guests
a sense of stepping back into the 19th century. Estate amenities
include an equestrian center, clay shooting, falconry, shooting,
golf, fishing, walking and more.
